What is wedding videography called?

By Darius Setsoafia · Published 24 October 2026

The short answer

Wedding videography is also described as wedding filmmaking or wedding cinematography. The finished result might be called a wedding video, film, highlight or documentary edit. Those names do not guarantee the same coverage or deliverables. Ask to watch the type of film you will actually receive, then check its length, sound and included recordings.

You search for a wedding videographer and suddenly everyone is a cinematic storyteller, a documentary filmmaker or a content creator. You just want to know who will record the wedding and what you will get back. Fair enough.

Videographer, filmmaker or cinematographer?

They are all names you will see used for wedding video work. A supplier might choose a title to describe their emphasis on storytelling, the edit or the look of the images. The title alone does not tell you the hours, crew or finished films.

Bridebook’s videography guide also discusses the overlapping video and film terminology. My advice is simpler: watch the work and ask what the actual offer includes.

What do the different film names mean?

A highlight film

A shorter edited selection of the day’s moments. It might combine music with lines from the vows or speeches. Ask about the length and listen to an example. “Highlight” on its own does not tell you how much spoken sound you will hear.

A cinematic film

This describes an approach to the look and edit, rather than a fixed number of minutes. Think about the movement, colour and pacing you like when you watch an example. It does not automatically mean lots of posing, or that the complete ceremony is included.

A documentary film

This can describe a longer, more sequential record of the day, but “documentary” can also describe an unobtrusive filming style. Ask which meaning the supplier intends. Natural coverage is not, by itself, a promise of a long edit.

Full ceremony and speeches recordings

These let you watch the full events rather than selected lines in the main film. Check whether they are included, optional extras or not offered. Also ask how the words will be recorded.

A teaser, reel or raw footage

A teaser or reel is a short edited piece, often made for sharing. Raw footage is unedited material. They are not interchangeable, and neither name promises a complete, finished wedding film.

For a supplier’s own explanation, Bright Sight describes its highlight and documentary films here. Treat those lengths and inclusions as that supplier’s offer, not a rule for every filmmaker. Comparing a name with a name can get confusing.

Our guides to wedding video length and what a photography and video package includes will help you check the actual deliverables.

Is a wedding content creator the same thing?

Not necessarily. An offer might focus on behind-the-scenes clips and social posts rather than a longer edited film with separately recorded sound. Services can overlap, so ask what will arrive, when it will arrive and what audio is included.

Do not assume short clips include a complete ceremony recording. Equally, do not assume a full wedding film package includes next-day reels. Those are separate questions.

My advice: describe the result you want

Try: “We would love a short film we can share, clear audio of our vows and the full speeches to watch afterwards. Which package does that, and what is the total?”

You do not need to learn the industry’s vocabulary to book well. Describe what matters to you, watch a complete example and get the details written down.

An example of how one supplier uses the names

At DS Media Moments, our Highlight film is 3–5 minutes and our Cinematic film is 8–12 minutes. Both full-day packages cover preparation through to the first dance. Full ceremony and speeches recordings are optional extras. That is our definition, not a promise about anyone else’s package.

If you want to see what that looks like, Ash and Katie’s film is one example of our work. Whether you enquire with us or someone else, ask to see the kind of finished film you would actually receive.
