How long should a wedding video be?Short enough to watch. Long enough to keep the voices.
There is no magic number for a wedding video. The right length depends on what you want the film to do: give you a short film to share, a fuller story with room to breathe, or a record of the vows and speeches you will want to hear again years from now.

The short answer
A 3–5 minute highlight is concise and easy to share. An 8–12 minute film gives the story more room, with more voices, atmosphere and people. If you want your vows, ceremony or speeches in full, those should be separate full-length edits. Never compare minutes without asking what the minutes contain.
What is a 3–5 minute wedding highlight?
A highlight film is the short, cinematic version of your day. It should give you the shape of the wedding: the morning, the nerves, the ceremony, the people, the portraits, the speeches, the dancing and the moment everyone finally loses it on the dance floor.
It is not designed to include every word or every guest. A fifteen-minute speech might become twenty seconds. An hour-long ceremony might appear through a few carefully chosen moments. That is not a problem. That is the job of a highlight film.
It is the one you send to your friends, post online and watch when you want the feeling of the day without sitting down for the entire day.
Is an 8–12 minute wedding film better?
Not automatically. Longer does not always mean better.
An 8–12 minute film gives the story more space. There is time for a little more atmosphere, longer sections of vows or speeches, more of the people you love and a clearer beginning, middle and end.
The best longer films are not simply highlight films with extra footage added. They have a proper narrative arc. The moments have time to land. Voices are allowed to finish a thought.
That is why the right film length depends on the material from your day, not an arbitrary number on a package page.
Do we need the full ceremony and speeches?
If hearing the actual words matters to you, yes. Your main wedding film may include selected moments from your vows and speeches, but that is different from receiving the ceremony and speeches in full.
Ask your videographer:
- Is the ceremony recorded from beginning to end?
- Are the speeches delivered in full?
- Is the audio clean and understandable?
- Are these separate films or part of the main edit?
- Are they included or charged as add-ons?
- Is everything written in the contract?
“Full ceremony” can mean a stationary recording from one camera or an edited multi-camera film. Those are different things. Neither is automatically wrong, but you need to know which one you are buying.
Your highlight film is the story you will watch often. The full ceremony and speeches are the record you will value more and more as the years pass.
Which wedding video length is right for us?
A small wedding with ten guests may not need the same deliverables as a 150-person wedding with three ceremonies, six speeches and a dance floor that refuses to close. The film should fit the day you are actually having.
The question to ask your videographer
Ask this: “What exactly is included in that film length?”
Then ask to watch a complete delivered film, not just a showreel. A showreel proves that someone can find good moments. A full film shows how they handle the quieter parts, the transitions, the speeches, the sound and the people who were not standing in perfect light.
Also ask when you will receive everything. A short sneak peek is not the same as the finished film, and the main film is not the same as full ceremony and speeches recordings.
The words “cinematic”, “documentary” and “full day” sound lovely. They are not deliverables.

The simple answer
Choose the film you will actually watch.
A 3–5 minute highlight is not less valuable because it is short. An 8–12 minute film is not automatically better because it is longer. Full ceremony and speeches recordings are not replacements for either; they preserve the words and moments that a cinematic edit has to condense.
Ask what the minutes contain. Watch complete examples. Get the deliverables in writing. Then choose the people you trust to notice the bits you cannot plan.
