How I actually shoot a wedding day

Most of the day, you won’t know where I am. That’s deliberate: the photos worth keeping are the ones nobody posed for, your gran during the vows, your mates mid-speech, the bit of the dance floor where everyone finally stops caring. So I stay out of the way and let the day happen.

The exception is your couple session, and even that isn’t what people fear. It’s a couple of easy poses to start, then conversation: talk about your first date, walk that way, tell them what you were thinking when they walked in. You get natural moments that are really quite styled, because when you remember the good stuff your face does the work for you. And most of the time you’re over here and I’m way over there with a long lens, which is exactly why it doesn’t feel like a photoshoot.

If you hate having your photo taken

Nearly everyone says this, usually followed by “I don’t know what to do with my hands.” It’s the single most common worry I hear, and it’s my job to fix, not yours. Twenty minutes, a handful of prompts, no standing around being inspected. If the nerves run deep, add an engagement shoot: an hour together beforehand and the camera stops being a stranger, so by the wedding you already know how this goes.

Group photos without losing an hour of your day

Write the list. Names, groupings, in order. I’m good, but my name isn’t Harry Potter, if Auntie J has flown in from Australia and nobody tells me, she won’t be in the formals. Budget 3–4 minutes per grouping: ten groupings is half your drinks reception gone, so keep the formal list short and let me catch the rest as candid clusters through the evening. With a list, a confident voice and a bit of teacher energy, the whole thing runs in minutes and nobody gets missed.

And the rule that saves every morning: whatever time you need to be ready, tell your hair and makeup team an hour earlier than that. They will run late. A chilled morning makes a great day, and it shows in every frame before noon.

Do you need two photographers?

Usually not. If you’ve got 30 guests in one room, a second shooter mostly ends up photographing the first one. I’ll tell you honestly when your day genuinely needs a second pair of hands, and when it doesn’t, and I’d rather lose the add-on than sell you something your day won’t use.

What you get back, and when

A handful of sneak-peek photos the next morning, so you can post “we did it” while everyone’s still glowing. Your full gallery lands in 4–6 weeks on a private client portal, yours to share how you like. Not a highlight set, the whole day, properly edited.

Photo and film together

If you want both, booking them together is the version that actually works: one team, one schedule, one style. No two suppliers negotiating over the same twenty minutes of golden hour, no clash of aesthetics between your photos and your film. Photography is £850 half day and £1,400 full day, and a simple video add-on starts at £150 alongside a photo package. Every number is published on the site, and there are no travel charges anywhere in the North East.
